Fast food contains substances that can disrupt your hormones.
- According to the NPD study, the “fast-food” branch alone represents 63% of the catering market share in France.
- With 19 billion euros in annual turnover recorded in 2020, it has been less impacted by the health crisis than the other branches of the catering industry.
A new search demonstrates that the dishes sold in fast food restaurants contain many substances that are potentially toxic to the body. “We conducted a study to examine the concentrations of ortho-phthalate and plasticizers in foods and oven mitts from various US fast food outlets.” write the authors of the study in the preamble.
Burgers, fries, nuggets, burritos…
In addition to gloves, they analyzed burgers, fries, chicken nuggets, chicken burritos, and cheese pizzas. Bottom line: they found phthalate DnBP and the plasticizer DEHT in 81% and 70% of the food samples, respectively. “Median DEHT concentrations were significantly higher in burritos than in burgers, and DEHT was not detected in French fries,” say the researchers. Cheese pizza had the lowest concentrations of most chemicals.
For stricter regulations
“We found that phthalates and other plasticizers are widely available in prepared foods available in US fast food chains, which means that many consumers are receiving potentially harmful chemicals with their meal,” said study director Lariah Edwards, a researcher at George Washington University. “Stricter regulations are needed to help keep these harmful chemicals out of the food supply,” she concludes.
