Finnish researchers have come to the conclusion that women smokers are more likely to have a stroke than men who consume the same tobacco.
The problem is, these researchers have yet to find out why women are more prone to stroke than men when they smoke. Corn what the statistics they studied reveal is a 4-fold (3.89, to be precise) increase in stroke risk in women who consume between a half and a pack of cigarettes per day, against “only” by a little more than 2 (2.13), for men.
More risk of stroke in smokers
In “light smokers”, ie those who smoke less than ten cigarettes per day, the risk is further multiplied by nearly 3 (2.95) in women, against “only” by almost 2 (1 , 93) in males. It can be seen, on reading these figures, that smokers see their risk of having a stroke multiplied by the increase in tobacco consumption, which is less significant for men.
The study, published in the journal Stroke does not detail whether the researchers integrated the aggravating factors of taking the third and fourth generation pill. We know that these contraceptives, combined with tobacco, amplify the risk of cardiovascular pathologies in women.
Quitting smoking immediately reduces cardiovascular risks
On the other hand, the study confirms that stopping smoking has immediate positive effects on health. The risk of stroke returns to normal in both smokers and smokers, only six months after stopping smoking …
