At the initiative of the Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Marisol Touraine, representatives of ten countries (Australia which is the first country to have introduced neutral cigarette packages but South Africa, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Sweden and Uruguay) gathered today in Paris for the First International Ministerial Conference on Tobacco Control and Support for neutral package.
“The objective that we are pursuing with other countries, at the international level, is a world without tobacco and the French will is that the generation which is born today be a generation without tobacco” declared the Minister. on RTL’s antenna.
In France, by 2030, tobacco will kill 78,000 people each year. “It’s like having four coaches full of tourists crashing into a ravine every day,” the minister said.
As part of the anti-smoking measures, MEPs voted on April 3 in favor of the neutral package. Same size, same color, same typography, no logo: from 2016 all packages will be the same. The only distinction that will remain will be the brand name, which will continue to appear, but in small print. This measure mainly targets young people, who are particularly sensitive to logos, brands and marketing.
