L’obesity and the smoking prevent healing from rheumatoid arthritisaccording to results of a study presented at the European League Against Rheumatism Annual Congress (EULAR 2016). Conclusions that should push doctors to encourage patients to lose weight and quit smoking. Being overweight and smoking would reduce the chances of remission by 3.
Researchers from McGill University (Canada) assessed the effects of body mass index (BMI) and smoking in 1008 patients with rheumatoid arthritis early and under treatment.
“Despite the high prevalence ofexcess weight and smoking in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, it is unclear to what extent these modifiable lifestyle factors influence the likelihood of achieving sustained remission,” said study researcher Dr. Susan Bartlett of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. .
The findings of this study showed that among the participants, just under half of the men were overweight and a third obese, 20% smoked. A third of the women were overweight, a third obese, and 15% smoked.
Stop smoking to cure rheumatoid arthritis
Scientists have observed that the smoking and theexcess weight modified the likelihood of sustained remission in both men and women.
Indeed, 41% of male, non-smoking participants with a healthy BMI had a probability of achieving lasting remission within 3 years, compared to 15% of male smoking and obese participants.
And, 27% of women in this situation, compared to 10% of women who smoke and are obese…
“Our results show that not smoking and maintaining a healthy body weight – lifestyle factors that can be modified by patients – can have a significant impact on disease remission.”
