February 19, 2009 – While most marine omega-3 supplements help prevent cardiovascular disease, not all are created equal … in the mouth. How to avoid gastric reflux with a fishy aftertaste?
By keeping the capsules in the freezer!
In a recent bulletin issued by the American Mayo Clinic1, it is explained that the gel allows to slow down the degradation of fish oil and allows the stomach to better assimilate it – thus avoiding gastric refluxes of a marine nature.
The Mayo Clinic suggests other tips that may be effective:
- Take your omega-3 capsules at the start of a meal. Food absorbs fish oil and reduces reflux.
- Opt for capsules with a controlled degradation coating (enteric-coated or “odorless”).
- Change brands: Not all products are the same, so some supplements may be better digested than others.
In addition to their cardiovascular health benefits, marine omega-3 supplements may relieve some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Fish oil supplements are among the best selling natural products in Canada. They arrive at 4e rank, behind glucosamine, garlic and echinacea.
