Contaminated fish: what are the symptoms of Listeria infection?
“People who have consumed the ‘products’ mentioned above and who present with fever, isolated or accompanied by headaches, and body aches, are invited to consult their doctor and report this consumption, warns him site. Pregnant women as well as immunocompromised people and the elderly should be particularly attentive to these symptoms.” These may be those of listeriosis, the disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeriosis: a serious illness in vulnerable people
This small bacteria is sensitive to heat: It is destroyed after cooking for 30 minutes at 60°C. “Listeria monocytogenes does not alter the taste of food, unlike most other pathogens transmitted through food, explaining the possible repeated ingestion and in large quantities of this bacteria.alerts himPastor Institute. The incubation period can last up to two months. In the event of contamination, immunocompromised people, pregnant women, infants, the elderly, those suffering from cancer or having received a transplant are more likely to develop a serious form. “In adults, the disease results in an infection of the blood (sepsis), or even of the central nervous system, which then manifests itself mainly as meningoencephalitis (i.e. an infection of the meninges and brain)”, warns the Pasteur Institute. To reduce the risks, antibiotic treatment must be implemented as quickly as possible.
