How to educate young people about organ donation ? By a tool used by many of them: Tinder. The primary goal of this dating app is to select profiles of people who are geographically close to you and likely to please you. If two people mutually select their profiles, it’s a “match”, and discussion can begin. But soon, the application will offer a new feature to UK users: that of registering for the National Health System (NHS) organ donor registry. Indeed, the United Kingdom is currently experiencing a significant shortage of organs intended for donation as 7,000 people are registered on the waiting lists for a transplant, and more than 6,000 patients have died over the past ten years due to failure to receive an organ transplant in time.
“It takes only two minutes to register on the registry”
Tinder even created celebrity profiles especially for the campaign, like that of Welsh Olympic taekwondo gold medalist Jade Jones. Users who choose these profiles will receive the following message: “If only it were that easy for those in need of a life-saving organ to find a donor“But awareness is not enough, action must also follow.”A third of the UK’s population has registered their donation intentions in the NHS National Donor Registry, but millions of other volunteers still have not taken the final step“lamented on the BBC website Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation at the NHS. “Signing up to the registry only takes two minutes – about the same time it takes to select a few profiles on Tinder.“she added.
