Kia, Volkswagen and Skoda did good business last year
It was a crazy year, that 2021. But luckily there are things that will never change, no matter what happens in the world. In the Netherlands we still opt for the most sensible (and often the cheapest) option when it comes to cars. This is evident from the list of best-selling cars of 2021. And preferably in the color gray – if only because the boss has to. Unfortunately, the rest of the sales in 2021 were very disappointing. We’ll take you through the key points and the forecast for 2022.
The best-selling car of 2021 is the Kia Niro. One of the reasons why this car is so popular is, among other things, the wide range of motorization. It is available as a plug-in hybrid, as a hybrid without a plug and as a fully electric car. And all of them are reasonably priced. The electric version is responsible for more than half of Niro’s sales. This makes it the second most popular EV in the Netherlands. The Skoda Enyaq takes first place here.

Car sales figures in 2021
Although they will undoubtedly open a bottle of champagne at Kia, it is no party when it comes to car sales. In 2021 there were 322,831 new cars with Dutch registration. That is a decrease of 9.2 percent compared to 2020, according to figures from the Bovag. And don’t forget that 2020 was also a corona year. In 2019, dealers were able to put no fewer than 446,114 cars on Dutch license plates.
One of the biggest causes of the disappointing sales is the chip shortage. ‘The sector is severely affected by the chip shortages, which has disrupted the supply and car manufacturers are currently able to produce far fewer cars. As a result, the extradition is delayed,” the Bovag reports. Both normal fuel cars and electric cars use these chips.
Expected car sales in 2022
It is difficult to estimate how many cars will be sold this year. The chip shortage is slowing down the worldwide production of cars and the addition for EVs in the Netherlands is going up, which can stop lease drivers. However, as of today, an EV subsidy is again available for private individuals and there are more and more cheaper EVs. De Bovag expects that the total by the end of 2022 will come to approximately 390,000 new registrations.
