Blades, pens, wires… In total, 33 objects were found in the stomach of a 30-year-old Indian patient. Such was the surprise of surgeons at a hospital in the state of Madhya Pradesh (India) during a disconcerting operation, told by the site DNA. The man had gone to the doctor for stomach pain. It eventually turned out that he had a habit of eating anything nearby, including non-edible and dangerous items.
A rare eating disorder
In reality, this mania for ingesting substances (chalk, coal, soap, metal, sand) without being able to control oneself is similar to pica disease. An unknown pathology, which can have serious consequences. This impulsive consumption can in fact lead to intestinal obstructiona perforation with peritonitisairway obstruction or heavy metal poisoning. Pain “insupportable” felt by the thirties was therefore linked to the accumulation of objects in his stomach over the years.
In fact, the situation was brought to light when the man went to the hospital for his ailments, and had an x-ray. Once the discovery of pens, knives, needles, metal cables, razors, screwdrivers and leather came to light, he was immediately sent to the emergency room. This was followed by an operation on July 17 of nearly two hours to extract all his improbable meals. An extraordinary and difficult intervention, according to the doctors, but the patient is now “out of danger”.
This disorder from which he suffered is mainly associated with mental or behavioral pathologies. The psychotherapy will surely be recommended to him. But this type of case “challenges the limit of human endurance”, says Dr. MPN Khare, director of the hospital responsible for his care. Last year, 2,000 coins had been found in the womb of a Japanese patient.
