Actions of plants on the digestive system
There tisane is one of the preferred forms of herbal medicine, a practice that consists of treating everyday ailments with plants.
Many are used to treat disorders that affect the digestive system. Some will act directly on the biliary system and the liver (rosemary, dandelion, milk thistle, among others), those that include bitter substances will rather calm stomach pains by producing juices (this is particularly the case gentian), while others will have an antispasmodic action (lemon balm, fennel and peppermint in particular).
Finally, some act directly on the symptoms that occur in case of difficult digestion. This is particularly the case with star anise, which relieves flatulence and associated pain.
Tips for preparing your infusion
It is usually enough to let the plants infuse in simmering water for 3 to 10 min.
If your drink is bitter, choose honey over sugar to make your drink more pleasant to consume.
Finally, do not exceed 3 to 4 cups of infusion per day.
Precautions for use related to the consumption of plants
Always consult your doctor, pharmacist or herbalist if you are using a herb for the first time. Some enter, in fact, into interaction with certain drug treatments. This is particularly the case with fennel, milk thistle and mint.
In addition, some herbs are also not recommended for pregnant women or people with specific pathologies.
So always ask about the contraindications possible leaves, flowers and/or bark that you plan to consume in herbal teas.
Finally, the consumption of herbal tea should not replace the consultation of your doctor if you frequently encounter digestive disorders.
Make an emergency appointment if these are associated with fever, blood, intense pain and if they result from an accident or a fall.
