Montreal, November 19, 1997 – The Guilde des herboristes du Québec held its second conference at the Montreal Botanical Garden on September 28. Following this meeting, the members of the Guild resolved to present a brief to the Commons Standing Committee on Health. This committee is to make recommendations to the Minister of Health, Allan Rock regarding the new regulations on medicinal plants.
Minister Rock, following protests, petitions and gatherings of producers and consumers across Canada and Quebec, suspended the entry into force of the new regulations on medicinal plants which were to come into force on January 1, 1998.
Last May, a demonstration organized by the Guild brought together 250 people on Rachel Street in Montreal to express their dissatisfaction with the prospect of seeing several medicinal plants withdrawn from the market and producers subject to standards that would have forced many to simply cease their activities.
