Tiger sharks and bulldogs remain banned for consumption in Réunion, according to the ANSES decision, due to their possible contamination by ciguatoxins.
Sharks are dangerous, but not as you might imagine. This time it is we, the shark eaters, who can poison ourselves. The National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Anses) had been seized by the prefect of Réunion about the consumption of tiger and bulldog sharks. She has just given her opinion, and continues to ban this consumption.
A focus of poisoning in Madagascar
Indeed, she believes that these two species of sharks could be contaminated by ciguatoxins. These cause food poisoning, which can be fatal. However, an outbreak of poisoning was recently observed in Madagascar. And as sharks move between the two islands, ANSES considers that it is not possible to exclude the risk that these sharks caught in Réunion may be contaminated.
The Agency emphasizes, however, that none of the analyzes carried out to date as part of the research program conducted at the Réuion has shown the presence of ciguatoxins in the flesh of sharks taken above the detection limit.
In addition, ANSES recalls that the consumption of sharks, just like that of swordfish, marlin, sikis and lamprey should be avoided, as a precaution, in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and in children below. age, due to their mercury content.
