This is the result of a survey conducted by researchers at the University of East London published in the scientific journal Addiction which questioned the adverse or beneficial effects of electronic cigarette.
The study focused on the use of electronic cigarettes. It was carried out by internet among users of these cigarettes.
Between September 2011 and May 2012, 1,347 “smokers” from 33 European countries, with an average age of 43, (70% of men) answered the online questionnaire on their age, sex, ethnicity, level of education and country, current or past smoking and reason for smoking.
The specific questions on the e-cigarette focused on the behavior of smokers with this “new cigarette”. How do they use it? What kind of product do they eat, what flavor do they prefer? What consumption in puffs?
Most smokers have discovered electronic cigarettes through the Internet, or through personal contact.
Almost half of Internet users (49%) use it within the first 6 to 30 minutes after waking up and 23% smoke it within 5 minutes after getting up.
In general, ex-smokers are more addicted to this cigarette than smokers. They use it more often, consume more puffs.
56% of smokers have the same relationship to electronic cigarettes as to real cigarettes, and 66% use it as a complete alternative to cigarettes
Electronic cigarettes and smoking cessation
75% of smokers report that they have not smoked for weeks or even months since they discovered electronic cigarette use, 14% report that their cigarette consumption has decreased significantly. 91% say that E-cigarette actually reduced their urge to smoke tobacco, and 70% say they no longer want to smoke.
These “smokers” seem satisfied with electronic cigarettes and are also in better health.
According to the results of this survey, electronic cigarettes are used primarily as an alternative to cigarettes and most often their use reduces both craving and smoking.
