Can opener is full of bacteria
Do you clean the counter and stove every evening after cooking and eating? For example, your kitchen may seem clean, but there are plenty of dirty places that you wouldn’t immediately think of.
The US National Sanitation Foundation (NSF International) has conducted research into the dirtiest places in the kitchen. For the study, 14 items, from vegetable drawer to knife block, from 20 different kitchens were tested for the presence of harmful bacteria such as salmonella, listeria and E.coli. 14 percent tested positive for listeria.
Places with the most bacteria were places that don’t get cleaned as often as the stove and counter.
These are the dirtiest places:
- the vegetable drawer in the fridge
- knives and accessories of blenders and mixers
- can openers
- rubber spatulas
- food storage containers with rubber rings
- knife blocks
How do you keep it clean?
If you have prepared food, such as raw meat, fish or poultry, put everything you have used in the dishwasher and wash it at a minimum of 60 degrees. Only at this temperature are all harmful bacteria killed. Don’t have a dishwasher? Washing by hand is of course also possible. Then use good hot water.
Also think of lids and rubber rings of jars, spatulas, can openers, graters and other kitchen utensils. Also replace your dish, hand and tea towel in the kitchen every day. Wash it in the washing machine at 60 degrees or more. That will kill most bacteria.
Refrigerator
To prevent the formation of bacteria, it is wise to regularly refrigerator to clean. You don’t have to completely empty it every week, but you should regularly clean the vegetable drawer. For example, if it is already empty before you go shopping. You can then clean it thoroughly once a month.
Not everyone who uses harmful bacteria come into contact with it, it also quickly becomes ill. Risk groups are mainly the elderly, pregnant women, sick people and small children.
