July 16, 2003 – An experimental herbal treatment has reportedly yielded intriguing results in the treatment of herpes.
The treatment, taken from the common apple (Prunella vulgaris), has been tested by Canadian researchers on mice or guinea pigs infected with two experimental forms of the herpes virus. The common sloe is a perennial belonging to the mint family, once used as a gargle to cure sore throats or mouth diseases.
They found that mice infected with herpes simplex 1 virus were less likely to die from the disease if they were treated with a cream made from sloe. The cream also reduced the number of skin lesions suffered by guinea pigs injected with the herpes simplex virus 2 by the researchers.
Researchers believe the results are promising enough to merit further study, at a time when the herpes virus is increasingly resistant to the main antibiotic used to fight it.
The results were unveiled at a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, but have not been published.
