While the comedy was the favorite, it was finally a drama on domestic violence that received the César for best film: “Jusqu’à la garde”, by French director Xavier Legrand.
On February 22, the prestigious César for best film was finally awarded to the feature film “Up to the hilt“, in particular with the aim of combating violence against women.
In an intense dramatic rise, the French director Xavier Legrand stages a forty-year-old (Léa Drucker, César 2019 for best actress) who, fearing the violence of her ex-spouse, does everything to obtain sole custody of her two children. But faced with a judicial system that chooses not to hear it – the viewer also doubts his version for a good part of the film – the situation degenerates. “I would like to dedicate this award to all the Myriams, to all these women who are not in a fiction, who are in this tragic reality”, declared, very moved, Léa Drucker.
A real public health problem
Despite the mobilization of public authorities, the media and the seventh art, the average annual number of women victims of physical and/or sexual violence committed by their former or current intimate partner is estimated at 219,000. 3 out of 4 women victims declare having suffered repeated facts, and 8 out of 10 women victims declare that they have also been subjected to psychological harm or verbal aggression.
“These situations of violence are a real public health problem because they have an impact on both the physical and mental health of the women who are victims of them. The repercussions also extend to children and this already from their conception, since 3 to 11 % of pregnant women have experienced violence from their spouse during their pregnancy”, writes on this subject Philippe Hauwe, general practitioner and psychotherapist, member of the Violence Commission, Institute of Preventive Medicine of the Scientific Society of General Medicine. “We general practitioners, because of our closeness to families, are really on the very front line in detecting and dealing with violence within the home. That is why it is important that we can have a tool to guide our conduct in the face of these particularly difficult dramatic situations to manage”, he adds.
In 2017, 130 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner
In 2017, 130 women were killed by their partner or ex-partner, a figure that is increasing. Of the 109 women killed by their official spouse, at least 51, or 47%, were victims of previous violence by this companion. Of the 16 women who killed their spouse, at least 11, or 69%, were victims of violence within the couple*. Custody also received Best Editing and Best Screenplay.
