Like its little cousins, mandarin and clementine, orange is a real winter fruit. We enjoy the benefits of orange between December and April. That’s good because it’s in the cold season that we tend to be the most fragile and the most tired: we therefore have a great need for vitamin C.
Orange is the second most consumed fruit in France after the apple. This citrus is first and foremost an excellent source of vitamin C which stimulates the immune system and protects against disease and viral and microbial attacks
One 150g orange covers the adaily pport vitamin C recommended and can therefore protect us from possible deficiencies.
The different varieties of orange
There are several varieties of orange such as:
- Valencia Late : an orange from Asia of medium size with a thin skin very appreciated for its richness in juice.
- Salustiana : the orange which has the greatest juice content. It does not have any glitches. It has a round appearance and is slightly flattened.
- Navel oranges : it is usually struck by a small secondary growth which looks like a navel and which is visible on its upper part. Well adapted to the Mediterranean climate, it is characterized by a beautiful interior and exterior coloring and an exquisite taste.
- Navel Late : the queen of oranges thanks to its high fructose content and its very fine pulp. It is also rich in juice.
- blood orange : the pulp has a color that tends to blood red because of the presence of anthocyanin. Among the blood oranges, we count the Moro and the Taroco.
- Bitter orange : bitter oranges are also called bigarades. They are often used in cooking, to make marmalade, and in aromatherapy, to produce orange essential oil.
The benefits of orange
Orange is rich in flavonoids, components antioxidants that help fight against free radicals, responsible for skin aging and many pathologies.
Orange contains assimilated carbohydrates to sugars that provideenergy to the body.
Poor in lipids and in protein, orange is a fruit with a low calorie intake that is very suitable for people who want to lose weight.
Its low content fibers (soluble) makes it a very interesting ally for limiting the level of cholesterol in the blood. Orange stimulates digestion gently and reduces digestive disorders.
The fibers of the orange help to regulate the cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. So eating oranges helps prevent cardiovascular disease.
Orange would prevent some cancers. Consuming citrus fruits would reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx and digestive tract thanks to the antioxidants they contain.
Thanks to carotenoids which will stimulate the production of bone cells and stimulate the absorption of calcium, orange is excellent for the bones.
How to choose your oranges?
To choose a good orange, the flesh must be good closed. The thickness or color of an orange has absolutely nothing to do with its quality but rather with the climate that saw it grow.
Orange can therefore be green and ripe. Oranges can be stored for a week at room temperature or for 10 days in a refrigerator compartment.
Melting orange mousse recipe
Ingredients :
To make an orange dessert for 4 people, you need: 20 g of cornflour, 100 g of Granulated sugar, 3 eggs, and ¼ of Orange juice and of zest.
Preperation :
- We mix the juice and the zest of the oranges in a saucepan then we add the cornstarch with the egg yolks and 75 g of sugar.
- We do shudder the mixture over the fire while stirring with a whisk.
- For a few minutes, the mixture is left to cool making sure to stir occasionally.
- We bring up the egg whites snow with the rest of the sugar then add it to the first preparation.
- We pour everything into a cup that we put in fridge for several hours.
The dessert is ready to be enjoyed on its own or with dark chocolate.
