Trois-Rivières, April 4, 2003 – According to preliminary research1 carried out in Cuba with 65 healthy young women, aged 18 to 25, it is possible to establish a relationship between the appearance of the tongue and several disorders of the menstrual cycle. Diagnosis by observation of the tongue is one of the observation methods most used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with the taking of the six radial pulses. Researchers from the Unit of Natural and Traditional Medicines at the Institute of Basic Preclinical Sciences (ICBP) Victoria de Giron of the Medical University of Havana wanted to study the interest of this method for the diagnosis of menstrual disorders.
According to the DD Caridad Dovale (photo opposite), who presented this morning the results of the research at the first International Congress of Acupuncture of the Order of Acupuncturists of Quebec, we can associate a large and red tongue with menstruation spaced more than 35 days, a thin, red tongue with periods less than 21 days apart, light periods with a pale tongue with a thin, white coating, painful periods at points on the tongue, and dysmenorrhea with a bluish tongue with a pale orange border. Only hypermenorrhea (heavy bleeding) could not be associated with pattern particularly of the tongue, because in most cases it is accompanied by other disorders, particularly dysmenorrhea.
“The interest of this research lies above all in prevention,” says DD Dovale, because no one treats menstrual disorders. However, by the energy diagnosis specific to Chinese medicine, it is possible to act on the disturbances at the source of the symptoms. All the associations observed can be explained by the theories of traditional Chinese medicine. ”
