Stem cells are increasingly being used as a treatment. They are found in immunotherapy against cancers, in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases… And a few years ago, researchers realized that one of the most easily accessible and interesting reserves of these cells were our rules. This is the conclusion of a study published in the National Library of Medicine.
We often talk about periods in negative terms: they are painful, can be abundant, capricious, suffer the impact of endometrial diseases… But they could also have “good” sides, in particular because they harbor a quality content: these famous stem cells. If the track of treatment by immunotherapy for Alzheimer’s is already approached, this menstrual source is recent.
They would help the brain to fight against cognitive decline
Researchers therefore took these cells from menstruation and administered them to mice in the brain. The idea was to see if the cognitive symptoms linked to Alzheimer’s could decrease. Ihe biological response was very interesting, to the point of even seeing the plaques diminish (typical of the disease) that had settled in the brains of mice.
According to some researchers, by filling even 10 to 15ml of a menstrual cup, one could collect an incredible quantity of stem cells: from 10 million to 100 million (admittedly, the range is wide). Scientists think that, in the same way that these cells regenerate every month in the endometrium of women of reproductive age, they operate this mechanism in animals that have received them for treatment.
