Get a tattoo yes, but not by just anyone. “Tattoo understood if you go to a pro” is the slogan of the new campaign of prevention from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of the Grand Est region. According a recent Ifop poll10% of the French population is tattooed and one young person in five, aged 24 to 35, declares having a tattoo.
Faced with this social phenomenon, the ARS has decided to remind the general public of the regulations, the risks and the good practices for getting a tattoo. The Agency, contacted by France 3 Regionsdeclares to have noticed in recent years an “increase in the number of reports linked to bad practice, which is why it wishes to make users aware of the conditions for a successful tattoo”.
Risks of infection and allergy
The tattoo artist, to introduce the ink under the skin, pierces the protective barrier of the skin with a needle, as can be read on the ARS website. If the hygiene conditions are not respected, then there is a risk of bacterial infections but also of allergy, which results in itching and swelling at the level of the tattoo.
The ARS therefore recalls the conditions to be respected in order to avoid these problems. It is important to choose a tattoo artist who is registered with the ARS, which guarantees that the professional has undergone “hygiene and sanitation” training. It encourages monitoring the cleanliness of the premises and ensuring that the equipment is single-use or sterilized before each client. A more classic recommendation, the ARS also recalls the permanent aspect of the tattoo and invites you to think carefully.
She also explains that you have to make sure you are “tattoo compatible” and that people with skin problems or particularities (many freckles or moles) should seek the advice of a doctor before to make an appointment with the tattoo artist. Finally, she insists on the importance of respecting hygiene rules once the tattoo is done.
