A hospital caring for 3,000 patients in Jassem, in southern Syria, was destroyed by aerial fire, according to Médecins du Monde.
In Syria, bombs destroyed a hospital in the south of the country, in Jassem. The establishment, supported by Médecins du Monde, took care of more than 3000 patients; it “is no longer functional”, specifies the NGO in a communicated.
“At the time of writing, our partners deplore 21 injuries and nine deaths, including two members of the medical staff. Unfortunately, this figure is likely to increase due to the critical condition of some of the injured, says MdM. The deterioration of the situation in southern Syria adds to the difficulties encountered by humanitarian actors in intervening in other governorates, including that of Aleppo ”.
Aleppo cut off from humanitarian aid
In fact, in the besieged Syrian city, humanitarian aid is no longer reaching, care can no longer be provided. “The bombings against hospitals continue to intensify and the health situation is catastrophic in the eastern part of Aleppo: the populations are going through hell. It is so dangerous to be treated in the hospital that the staff prefers to welcome patients in hidden places, underground, at the expense of the quality of care and the lives of civilians ”, alarms Françoise Sivignon, president of the NGO, cited in the press release.
Civilians are held hostage in the city, victims of the bombardments which also affect humanitarian workers. “Health care structures and supply routes are deliberately bombed as part of a military strategy that cynically aims to scare people away through humanitarian corridors, where they become the target of the regime and its allies. We are reaching a point of no return, ”writes MdM.
“Médecins du Monde renews its cry of alarm and its indignation. We call on the international community to put pressure to end the siege of Aleppo and allow civilians access to humanitarian aid. Humanitarian corridors managed by conflict stakeholders are not a viable alternative ”.
