Perhaps one day we will have the choice between spreading ourselves with strawberries and put some Solar cream ? Work done in the laboratory shows that a strawberry extract would help the cells of the epidermis to protect themselves against the dangers of UV rays. Scientists assume that this “anti-UV” action originates in anthocyanins, molecules of the flavonoid family, which give strawberries their red color. These flavonoids, known for their antioxidant action therefore anti free radicals, would also have an anti-inflammatory action and against tumors, according to Sara Tulipani, researcher at the University of Barcelona.
Nothing to get carried away, research has so far been limited to an experiment carried out in vitro. Further data are needed to conclude that the strawberries have been effectively photoprotected. But Spanish and Italian researchers are hopeful. “For the moment, the results obtained serve as a basis for future studies, the objective of which will be to assess the activity of anthocyanins in the human dermis and epidermis,” explains Sara Tulipani.
The benefits of strawberries have repeatedly aroused the curiosity of researchers. Antioxidants found in strawberries would prevent stomach ulcers caused by alcohol, researchers found. As long as you eat them fresh!
Another California study, still published in Plos One, found that eating 37 strawberries a day would prevent diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and even cancer. Beware of strawberry overdoses anyway!
