As the sun becomes more and more present throughout the country, here is how to protect yourself from its harmful effects.
- Not protecting yourself properly from the sun can cause skin cancer.
- “While UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancers, particularly melanoma, 74% of French people say they do not systematically protect themselves from the sun during their outdoor leisure or sporting activities,” indicate dermatologists.
- They therefore list a series of tips for protecting yourself from the sun when the sunny days arrive.
The National Union of Dermatologists-Venereologists (SNDV) is launching a vast prevention and awareness campaign in order to better protect the French from the sun’s rays, which still too often cause skin cancer.
“While UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancers, particularly melanoma, 74% of French people say they do not systematically protect themselves from the sun during their outdoor leisure or sporting activities.” can we read in a press release. Doctors therefore list several tips to stem this phenomenon.
1/ Seek shade and avoid exposure to the sun between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
It is during these hottest hours that the ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun are most intense. For all outdoor activities, it is recommended to seek out shaded areas. “But be careful, shade does not completely protect against UV rays! We must not forget that at the beach, the parasol is useful but does not completely block out the sun because of the reflection on the sand and water” , specifies the SNDV.
2/ Wear a hat, long-sleeved clothing and sunglasses
Dark clothing filters UV rays more easily and provides the best protection against the sun.
“Sunglasses, if possible in a wraparound shape, are also essential. You must ensure that they carry the CE standard (preferably CE3 or CE4) for real protection”adds the SNDV.
“We also opt for a wide-brimmed hat that protects the eyes, face, neck and ears,” specify the specialists who are members of the institution.
3/ Regularly apply high protection cream
High protection sunscreens should be applied in a thick layer to all parts of the body not covered by clothing. It is recommended to use high protection indices (index 50+), active against both UVB and UVA.
“You must reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming,” indicates the SNDV.
“Contrary to popular belief, it is not because you apply sunscreen that you can be exposed for longer”, dermatologists also point out.
4/ Do not directly expose children
“Young children should not be exposed to the sun’s rays for prolonged periods of time, even if they are protected by sunscreen or clothing,” concludes the union.
