While 83% of French people have sunglasses for themselves, only 77% have them for their children.
Sunglasses are no longer just the trendy little accessory that goes so well with the color of the swimsuit and the sarong. No, the French seem to have finally understood that they are also and above all an effective means of protecting themselves from the rays of the sun. A survey carried out by Opinion Way for the National Association for the Improvement of Sight (Asnav) shows that in 2013, 83% of adults own a pair of sunglasses.
What about the children? If the prevention messages concerning solar equipment are starting to be well understood by adults, it seems that these same adults do not apply them as rigorously for their children. This barometer reveals that only 77% of adults own sunglasses for their offspring. This remains insufficient for vision specialists, who however note an improvement. In the same survey carried out in 2012, they were only 68% to declare having bought sunglasses for their children. No need to throw stones at these parents though, because it is easy to understand that it is easier to put sunscreen on your little boy’s back than to have him keep glasses on his nose for a while. a whole afternoon on the beach.
Listen to Bertrand Roy, Chairman of Asnav : “We know that it’s complicated to make a child wear glasses who makes sandcastles. But just as we put more cream on them than we do, we have to protect their eyes. “
The main reason for emphasizing the importance of wearing sunglasses in children is that their eyes are more fragile than those of adults. Physiologically, the child’s eye is particularly exposed and must therefore be particularly protected.
Listen to Professor Gilles Renard, from the French Society of Ophthalmology: ” A child’s eye structure allows much more UV and infrared to pass through, and abnormalities will accumulate in the following years. “
Visual health specialists point out that when it comes to sun visual protection, it is essential to follow a few practical rules. They advise you to wear filter sunglasses, whether you are in the city, in the mountains or at the beach. They also recommend that users pay attention to the presence of the CE marking on the products they buy. Finally, there is no need to rely on the tint of the lenses, 42% of French people are still wrong to think that darker lenses better protect the eyes from UV rays.
