Public Health France and the National Cancer Institute publish today the Cancer Barometer 2015 dedicated to the risks associated with exposure to natural and artificial UV rays. The opportunity to recall, in an information campaign on social networks, that the sun is not safe and that a few simple habits can protect against it.
According to this Health Barometer, 90% of people questioned know the link between exposure to the sun and skin cancer. But some protective actions still need to be improved. Indeed: nearly 3 out of 4 people declare to “burn” during a first exposure and only 4 out of 10 people apply cream every two hours.

Still too many misconceptions
• 47% of the population believe that if the childhood sunburn are well cared for, they are of no consequence in adulthood. However, sunburns received during childhood considerably increase the risk of skin cancer in adulthood and create damage to the eyes which can lead to serious sight problems.
• 24% think that doing artificial UV before the holidays helps prepare your skin for protection from the sun. However, far from preparing the skin for the sun, artificial UV rays only add to the sun’s UV rays and reinforce their carcinogenic effect.
• 21% think that the sun burns prepare the skin by making it less vulnerable to the sun. However, sunburn is a real burn of the skin.
• 10% believe that put on sunscreen once is enough to protect yourself for the day, but the application must be renewed every two hours in order to maintain effective protection.
