Whether the flow is light or heavy, don’t let your period keep you from enjoying the benefits of swimming this summer.
- Menstruation, or periods, refers to the periodic flow of a complex biological fluid composed of blood, vaginal secretions and endometrial cells from the uterine wall, evacuated through the vagina.
- This blood-like fluid is a visible manifestation of the menstrual cycle of women and females of reproductive age of certain mammalian species.
According to a new survey launched by Intima on social networks, 44% of women are not comfortable swimming during their period. Even in summer, 28% of French women totally refuse to bathe in swimming pools, lakes, the sea or rivers when the first bleeding occurs.
Swimming on your period does not attract sharks
Many women mistakenly think that bathing during their periods can be dangerous for their health, and that potential blood leaks can attract sharks. Except “there is no good medical reason to avoid swimming during your meducation. And tampons, when they absorb our blood, can also absorb the water in which we bathe. The old belief that you attract sharks when you’re on your period is actually just a myth!” recalls gynecologist Alyssa Dweck.
Another barrier to bathing during menstruation: the fear of leaks and stains on the swimsuit. 76% of respondents reveal that they are afraid that blood will spill into the water when they bathe. “Many women are afraid of staining their swimsuits, which can be very embarrassing. A menstrual cup offers excellent protection for this, because it collects blood instead of absorbing it.” says Dr. Alyssa Dweck. She adds : “leaks are very unlikely with a properly inserted cup”. In contrast, “sanitary pads are not suitable for swimming”, she specifies.
Swimming is recommended during menstruation
In addition, Alyssa Dweck points out that swimming is excellent for the body, especially during menstruation. First, because the water lowers the temperature of many women who sweat more during their period. Then because “Exercise is well known for reducing menstrual pain (including PMS), feeling bloated, etc. In addition, chemicals called endorphins are released in the brain during exercise, causing a sensation well-being and even euphoria.” In short, rules or no rules, so leave your towel and run to cool off!
