Two cases of meningitis type W were diagnosed on the premises of the American University of Paris, of which one of the two died. The victim is a 19-year-old student according to the Regional Health Agency of Ile-de-France (ARS) taken over by AFP, confirming information from the Parisian. Type W meningitis was diagnosed in February. The entourage who was in direct and close contact with the young girl were immediately taken care of via a vaccination and antibiotic treatment.
In May, a second case of meningitis of the same strain occurred in another student at the university. The ARS has undertaken to expand the vaccination campaign as a preventive measure: 200 students from the American University of Paris have been treated.
A precedent in Dijon
In January 2017, students of the University of Dijon had been the subject of a similar vaccination campaign organized by the ARS Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This measure was taken after the death of two students of the establishment as a result of meningococcal meningitis.
