Don’t expect Apple to follow others in the metaverse, while according to many experts this is the future.
Apple has always been stubborn. And that may well be one of the reasons for the company’s success. According to the latest newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has rejected the idea of a metaverse (in this case, an entirely virtual world) for its long-rumored mixed reality headset. It even goes so far as to say that the idea is ‘banned’. Instead, the emphasis would be on short communication, viewing content and playing games.
Apple and the Metaverse
The headset is due to debut this year, although many features are unclear and the target audience is unknown. It’s rumored to have 8K per eye resolution, more than a dozen “inside out” tracking cameras, and a developer focus priced at $3,000. Other analysts say the device will have fewer cameras and a lower price. This makes it more accessible to more people. Conclusion, we don’t know yet. It is therefore questionable whether the headset will come this year.
It is therefore striking that Apple does not focus on the metaverse. This while other large technology companies do this. Facebook, for example, who even changed the company’s name to Meta. This is to (also) emphasize how important the metaverse is. Where Meta has shifted its AR and VR strategies to the metaverse, Apple seems determined to avoid it. Or at least not for now.
Sensible strategy?
Apple is taking a gamble here. Whether the strategy could work is another question. Apple’s reported strategy could pay off if metaverses struggle. In addition, it could thwart Meta’s plans by limiting general interest in virtual worlds. However, if metaverses succeed, Apple may miss out and find that it works for others’ VR environments. Then it has to catch up and lag behind the competitors.
