This is a world first that the British Department of Public Health would have done well. The authorities have just recorded the “worst case of super-gonorrhea in the world”. This sexually transmitted infection, contracted in Southeast Asia by a Briton whose age and identity have not been disclosed, could not be cured with the combination of antibiotics usually used.
This combination of azithromycin and ceftriaxone had no effect on the infection.
A world “first” confirmed by the WHO
A few months ago, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the percentage of gonorrhea that did not respond to azithromycin alone had increased considerably. But, as Dr Gwenda Hughes of the UK Department of Public Health points out: “This is the first time that a case of gonorrhea has shown such high resistance to two drugs and most other commonly used antibiotics“. A” first “that the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed, according to the BBC.
An ultimate antibiotic still being tested
Analysis of the human infection suggests that one last antibiotic may work. He is currently being treated and doctors will see next month if the treatment is successful.
Left untreated, gonorrhea can cause infection of the testes and prostate. In women, it can cause infection of the uterus, tubes, ovaries, and infertility.
