A new study has identified the best way to treat a phobia.
- One in thirteen people suffers from a phobia (spiders, airplanes, enclosed spaces, etc.).
- To treat themselves, they can use exposure therapy, which is done in one or more sessions.
- According to a new study, choosing to have treatment in a single session is more effective.
A new psychology study compared different methods for treating phobias and identified the most effective.
Phobia Treatments: What is Exposure Therapy?
For one in thirteen people, the mere mention of spiders, plane travel, enclosed spaces or clowns can be a source of distress.
Fortunately, phobias can be treated with a psychological therapy called “exposure therapy.” This technique involves gradually confronting patients with their fears in a safe environment, thereby reducing anxiety and modifying negative reactions associated with phobia triggers. Exposure therapy can be used to treat different phobias.
1,758 adults and children suffering from phobias were treated
A new study has highlighted the effectiveness of a single session of exposure therapy for the treatment of phobias compared to multiple sessions.
This study analyzed data from 67 separate studies involving 1,758 adults and children suffering from phobias. Participants received exposure therapy in one or more sessions.
Treatment of Phobias: Single Session Exposure Therapy is Most Effective
Results showed that both treatment formats were effective in reducing fear and avoidance related to phobia triggers.
However, single-session exposure therapy was found to be the most time-effective option. The study found that this approach saw significant reductions in symptoms in just a few hours, with an average session duration of 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Treatment of phobias: how to choose your therapy?
The choice of treatment format may therefore depend on the patient’s individual preferences, as well as their time constraints and specific needs.
It is also essential that patients discuss these options with a mental health professional to determine the best approach for their situation.
