The Council of Ministers has accepted the lifting of the anonymity of the gamete donor (in the context of medically assisted procreation). Children born after artificial insemination by sperm donation (IAD) will be able to access the identity of their donor. “Access to the identity of the donor will be based on the latter’s consent. This will not have to be determined at the time of the donation, but much later, after the child comes of age, s ‘he requests it “explains Roselyne Bachelot in an interview on Figaro.fr.
For the Government, this law “allows a better consideration of the interests of the child”.
Professionals are concerned, however: this lifting of anonymity could have serious consequences such as a drop in the number of donors. Louis Bujan, president of the Federation of centers for the study and conservation of eggs and sperm (Cecos) speaks “Eighty percent of donors are for anonymity”.
This bill also brings a new measure: PACS couples will be able to benefit from medically assisted procreation, like married couples.
Access remains prohibited for single women and same-sex couples.
The bill will be considered by Parliament in November 2010.
