Vitiligo is a autoimmune disease during which white spots appear on the skin. These progressive depigmentations are more or less extensive. Although the disease is considered “mild” medically, it has a considerable psychological impact. The expectation of a treatment is therefore particularly strong because “current solutions such as phototherapy, corticosteroids and inhibitors have limited effectiveness” underlines Dr. David Rosmarin, dermatologist at the Boston Tufts Medical Center (UNITED STATES).
A ruxolitinib-based cream
The latter has just published the results of a clinical trial of a topical cream, which proved effective in reversing the effects of vitiligo in 50% of patients who tested it. This two-year study included 157 patients at 30 sites across the United States. “Topical application of ruxolitinib, currently used as an oral treatment for certain blood disorders, resulted in substantial improvement of facial vitiligo symptoms in nearly half of trial participants,” the doctor said at Congress. “The ruxolitinib topical has the potential to change the treatment of vitiligo. Not only is it effective in re-pigmenting the skin, but it also has an excellent safety profile,” added Dr. Rosmarin. Sun.
