On the occasion of CES in Las Vegas, Sony unveiled an electric SUV concept called Vision-S 02. It follows the sedan that the Japanese group presented at the same show in 2020. The Japanese group also announced the creation of a new “Sony Mobility” entity in spring 2022.
The Japanese group Sony unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, the Show dedicated to new technologies, a 100% electric SUV concept called Vision-S 02. In 2020, he had already presented a sedan called Vision-S 01. With the expansion of the electric vehicle market, some technology giants want to play a role in the field of mobility.
A 7-seater SUV
The Sony Vision-S 02 is a seven-seater SUV. It is based on the same platform – supplied by Magna – as the prototype sedan. Moreover, it displays exactly the same length (4.89 m) and the same wheelbase (3.03 m). On the other hand, the adventurer is higher (+ 20 cm; 1.65 m) and wider (+ 3 cm; 1.93 m). These dimensions are comparable to those of its future competitor, the Tesla Model Y. Motorization side, no change either. The Vision-S 02 has an axle motor, which develops 200 kW each. The total advertised power is 544 hp. If Sony had communicated on the 0 to 100 km / h of the Vision-S 01 sedan (4.8 s), no information was given for the Vision-S 02. We can estimate that it will turn around 5 s because of its heavier weight (+ 130 kg; 2480 kg) and its less advantageous aerodynamics. The maximum speed should exceed 180 km / h. The Japanese group also remains silent on the capacity of the batteries.
State-of-the-art technology
Electronics giant obliges, Sony has put all its know-how in on-board technologies. The Vision-S 02 takes advantage of a slew of photo sensors (CMOS) and Lidars, allowing the car to have a 360-degree view and offer a fully autonomous driving mode. Moreover, since January 2021, the manufacturer has been testing its technology in Europe on a prototype sedan. Sony also relies heavily on infotainment with a panel occupying the entire dashboard and an ultra-immersive sound system thanks to numerous speakers, integrated in particular in the seats. Vision-S SUVs and sedans will be linked to 5G and will be able to receive remote updates.
