Burning sensation, electric shock, stabbing … the pain that accompanies the shingles rash can last for years. But we relieve them better and better.
Beyond the skin discomfort due to the blisters, shingles sometimes causes very intense pain. In the event of a rash, you should therefore quickly consult your doctor, a dermatologist (if it is severe), or an ophthalmologist (if it affects the eye).
The treatment consists of a skin antiseptic (chlorhexidine) and an antiviral tablet, to be taken no later than 72 hours after the appearance of the blisters. If necessary, the doctor can combine an analgesic (aspirin, paracetamol …). As long as the skin has not returned to its normal appearance, it is better to avoid anything that itches and wear cotton clothes. But it can happen that the pain resists the usual treatments and especially persists. It is then necessary to consult a neurologist or a pain center.
More effective drugs
Doctors now have a wide range of drugs (antiepileptics, antidepressants, etc.) against these stubborn pains. But what acts on one patient does not necessarily act on another. Sometimes you have to try several molecules and adjust the dosage depending on the results and tolerance. If the treatment is effective, the doses are gradually reduced after a few months.
Some centers use a transcutaneous neurostimulator. It is a low intensity current generator, connected to lozenges applied to painful areas. Started three times a day, for an hour, it relieves without causing side effects. This very discreet device can initially be rented over a period of six months. It is supported by Social Security.
A vaccine for those over 60
Aimed at people over 60, those most affected by persistent pain, a vaccine should be marketed in France during the year. However, it is contraindicated in people with weakened immune systems. According to a recent study, it significantly reduced severe forms of shingles and painful sequelae. An injection should provide protection for more than ten years.
