May 8, 2000 – Although most vaccines don’t seem to trigger autoimmune diseases, some of them could. Indeed, several vaccines have been linked with Guillain-Barré syndrome and arthritis, among others, the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) triplet.
This is what Dr. Fred Miller, a spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States government, said at a conference on vaccination in Washington last week. “Side effects are rare,” said Dr Miller, and do not change the risk-benefit ratio.
The FDA is currently conducting research to try to understand how vaccines might trigger autoimmune diseases. It will study the variables of age, sex, combinations of vaccines and possible causes of differences in response to vaccination.
According to Dr. Miller, it is likely that a number of factors influence the onset of autoimmune diseases following vaccination.
