We can never say it enough. UV booths consume you slowly, as enticing as the promise of tanned skin may be. Not only they accelerate skin aging and do not protect the skin from the sun, but they overexpose skin cancer. A new illustration of this can be found in a study by the scientific journal Pediatrics. This sends a reminder to all those who want to boost their tan during this summer period. The message is aimed especially at young Americans, keen on naps in sunbeds. A million young Americans are said to be in the habit of frequenting UV booths.
Researchers from Dartmouth College in the United States interviewed a panel of 650 people aged 25 to 50 who have been diagnosed with skin cancer and 450 healthy people. Their tanning habits outdoors and in UV cabins were taken into account. The results confirm the association between a young exposure to artificial UV and the appearance of a basal cell carcinoma early.
Basal cell carcinoma is a fairly common form of skin cancer since it represents 70% of skin cancers. We heard about it recently with the announcement by actor Hugh Jackman that he was suffering from the disease. This skin cancer, localized especially in the face and neck, can be treated well if detected early.
As prevention is better than cure, remember that sun protection outside is imperative, in town and at the beach, summer and winter. As for UV cabins, this study is proof: we run away from them !
