This is how you protect the skin of your thighs
Abrasive thighs that cause painful scrapes are a common ‘summer ailment’. Protect the skin on your thighs with these six tips.
Especially when it is hot, many women suffer from chafing thighs. The abrasions occur when the skin of one leg rubs against the skin of the other leg for a while. It is more common in summer. After all, you are more likely to wear shorts or dress, so that your bare thighs touch each other. When you perspire, your skin is moist and therefore extra vulnerable.
To lose weight?
Abrasive thighs have nothing to do with being overweight. Anyone who has thighs that touch can suffer from abrasions. Also people with very muscular thighs. In addition, there are plenty of women with a healthy BMI who, because of their physique, simply have thighs that rub against each other when they walk.
1. Keep dry
Moist skin is more vulnerable. So try to keep your skin dry. A layer of talcum powder can help, which absorbs moisture. There are also women who apply deodorant or an antiperspirant to their thighs to reduce perspiration.
2. Special cream
Another option is to rub your thighs so that they don’t rub against each other, but glide smoothly when you walk. There are creams for sale that have been specially developed for this purpose, such as Body Glide Anti Chafing, Vevina and Smoovall.
3. Home remedies
In addition, there are all kinds of home remedies that can be a solution, such as body lotion, massage oil, coconut oil, lubricant and petroleum jelly. Dab a little on the sensitive areas, but watch out for stains on your clothes. Unfortunately, this does not work for everyone: one swears by it, the other sweats such an ointment off within half an hour.
4. Cover
If you cover your bare skin, your problem will also be a thing of the past. And we don’t mean covering with long pants, but with pants or underwear that are just long enough to protect the chafing part of your thighs.
Being suitable:
- boxer shorts with longer legs
- so-called shapewear (corrective underwear) with longer legs
- airy short leggings, such as short running tights, sliding pants, cycling shorts
- a cut off pantyhose (do not cut too short)
- bandelettes (straps of fabric that you wear around the thighs).
5. Exercise in tight leggings
During exercise, a slightly longer, tight legging or tight synthetic fabric that wicks away perspiration is often the best. If the pants are too short, the bare thighs will touch each other, with wide pants, the flapping fabric can cause chafing.
6. Shower
Don’t walk around in your sweaty clothes after your workout. The moisture and salt from your sweat exacerbates irritation. So jump in the shower immediately after exercising, or when you come home after a hot (work) day.
Still wounds?
Gently clean the irritated skin with water. Showering with chafing wounds can take a while… Then carefully but very gently pat the spots dry with a towel. If necessary, use a hair dryer to dry your affected skin well or let your legs air dry.
If the wounds are closed, you can apply a soothing ointment such as baby bottom cream. In case of serious, painful wounds, ask your doctor for advice.
