Suffering from Covid-19, a 30-year-old gave birth to her child in Colombia by cesarean section, while she was in an artificial coma. Still in the incubator, the infant is doing well and has not contracted the virus.

Giving birth while in a coma is possible…. This is what happened to Diana Angola, a 36-year-old Colombian from the city of Cali, hospitalized on May 15 for a high fever and who contracted a severe form of Covid-19.
Pregnant, she was plunged into an artificial coma to be able to give birth. A caesarean section was performed so that the future mother could give birth to her baby, at 14 weeks of the term.
“It’s a case that generated a lot of stress because we knew that there were few cases of survival reported in a context as serious as that of our patient”, explained to AFP Paula Velasquez, a doctor specializing in internal medicine at the Versailles clinic, located in Cali.
More than 88,000 confirmed cases in Colombia
Her little boy, named Jefferson, was therefore born at less than six months, with serious breathing difficulties. His care required resuscitation and had to go through “the whole procedure of a critical patient”, one of the pediatricians at the Edwin Olivo clinic told AFP.
Still in the incubator, the child quickly gained weight and was diagnosed negative for Covid-19. Her aunt Angela Agola insists on the need to respect hygiene measures aimed at protecting the population from the virus: “There are many people who go out without a mask, who party, because they don’t know anyone with the virus, they do not realize “its dangerousness”, she laments.
Colombia is one of the countries most affected by the Covid-19 epidemic in Latin America, with more than 88,000 confirmed cases and more than 2,800 deaths.
