In 30 years, the sex life of seniors has blossomed considerably. More than 50% say they are satisfied and almost 90% consider that this is no longer a taboo.
The idea of a gloomy and dull sex life among seniors is over. They are even more and more satisfied with their sexuality, according to the thesis by Nils Beckman, researcher at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
The researcher was interested in the evolution of sexuality in seniors over 70 years old and over 97 years old. He also identified some factors that would explain why some couples still have sex and others don’t. Over 1,500 people over the age of 70 and nearly 300 people over the age of 95 participated in this study.
Sexuality has no age
In 30 years, seniors have experienced a tremendous development in their sex life. In the 1970s, 47% of men were sexually active, compared to 66% in 2000. Among women, the proportion rose from 12 to 34%.
This increase in the number of intercourse with his or her partner goes hand in hand with greater sexual satisfaction. Indeed, 6 out of 10 women and 7 out of 10 men say they are satisfied. “A sense of well-being, good physical condition and good mental health contribute to sexual satisfaction,” explains Nils Beckman. “Previous experiences and the quality of the relationship also play a role,” he adds.
Childhood: a major influence
In women over 70, several factors external to their health also seem to have an impact on their sex life. First of all, difficulties during childhood have a strong influence. The study shows that poverty, arguments and parental divorces or even corporal punishment decrease sexual desire and activity.
In addition, each partner has their role to play. Sex is largely based on male libido. For the author, it is above all a question of generation. “Perhaps one of the reasons is the male and female roles this generation grew up with, dictating that men always take the initiative. “
At 95, sex is not taboo
According to this study, the over 97s are not left out. Sexual desire is more common in men (27%) compared to women (5%). Only one man (no woman) reported still having sex. But the elders emphasize kisses, tender gestures and physical contact.
“The study shows that even people over 90 experience sexual desire. While few are active at this age, they report having erotic thoughts and dreams, and often they regret not having the chance to share intimacy with another person, ”says Nils Beckman.
And contrary to what one might think, sexuality is far from being a taboo subject for this generation. Nearly 9 in 10 find it normal for a healthcare professional to ask questions about their sexuality.
“Caregivers should be aware that love, desire and sexuality do not dissipate in older people. Caregivers should not hesitate to ask questions of their patients if they experience sexual problems, regardless of their age. “
