Sales of e-bikes have overtaken regular bicycles in the Netherlands for the first time.
Years ago, an electric bicycle was still something for old people. At least, that was the image people had. Gradually, e-bikes became more affordable and more common on the streets. Then there were more companies that managed to present beautifully designed e-bikes. And suddenly it is very hip and normal to have an e-bike. You can see that in the sales.
For the first time, e-bike sales are greater than regular bicycle sales in the Netherlands. This is apparent from a study by GfK commissioned by BOVAG and RAI Association. Of every 100 bicycles sold in our country, 52 were an e-bike.
A total of 923,000 new bicycles were sold in 2021. Normally, more than a million are sold. In 2020, for example, 1.1 million bicycles were sold in the Netherlands. However, the supply problems in retail also have an effect on two-wheelers, which are popular among the Dutch. As a result, sales fell by 16 percent last year compared to 2020.
It remains to be seen whether another million or more bicycles will be sold this year. The parts supply issues are still not over and will continue to play a role this year and perhaps next year. The reversal may be final. The reversal that e-bikes sell better in the Netherlands than the regular two-wheeler.
