Nevertheless, you have to be careful: the number of accidents on the (electric) bicycle continues to rise. In this article you can read more about preventing head injuries due to an accident on a bicycle and whether a helmet requirement is expected for the electric bicycle.

An accident is in a small corner. An accident does not always have to be caused by your behavior. It can also be caused by another driver not paying attention. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to reduce the chance of an accident. Think, for example, of good lighting both at the front and back and wearing a bicycle helmet.

Is a bicycle helmet mandatory for the electric bicycle?
There is currently no helmet requirement for electric bicycles in the Netherlands, with the exception of speed pedelecs. The speed pedelec is the faster version of the e-bike and can reach speeds of up to 45 kilometers. Due to these high speeds, this bicycle is seen as a moped. There are therefore special rules: you need a driver’s license and helmets are compulsory.
For example, if you look at the mountain bike, helmets are increasingly worn to protect the head. For example, wearing a helmet is becoming more and more common among our neighbors in Germany, especially among children. In the Netherlands, too, you see more and more children and adults wearing helmets.
For now, there is no law that stipulates that wearing a bicycle helmet is mandatory. Nevertheless, our advice is to take safety on the road seriously and to wear a bicycle helmet: especially when you go off-road with your bike, for example.
