I’ve had a salty taste in my mouth for two months now. Everything in my mouth feels like a sponge. My lips and tongue are dry and sore and my throat feels gritty. Do you know what to do? I am a 66 year old woman.

Change in taste can have many causes. I would therefore bring it up to the ENT doctor. In your case, I’m not sure if the taste change is the first problem or if you have Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS): a combination of dry mouth and irritation of the oral mucosa. By the dry mouth move the tongue more, lick the lips more often and swallow more often, in an attempt to moisten the mucous membranes. This reinforces itself: the more aroused it becomes, the more it starts to ‘rumble’ in the mouth. If it is very bad, a low dose of drugs can depression whether epilepsy help; they change the transmission of incentives a bit. Artificial saliva can also sometimes help.
