The United States is hit by a wave of salmonellosis. 181 cases have been detected (including 33 hospitalizations), in 40 different states. An epidemic that worries as much as it intrigues.
Salmonellosis is a very common infectious disease. It is most common in summer. Caused by a bacterium, salmonella, it is usually contracted after eating expired or undercooked foods such as eggs or meat. In this case, the reason seems to be different.
Contact with chickens at the origin of this epidemic
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) interviewed hospital patients. 86% of them said they had been in contact with live poultry at least a week before contracting the virus.
Some Americans indeed see the hen as the new pet and thus let their poultry enter their home, not hesitating to cuddle and kiss it. Behavior that increases the risk of infection.
Salmonellosis is the cause of 450 deaths per year in the United States according to the CDC. 1.2 million people are infected each year. Symptoms of this virus are diarrhea and fever, but lack of treatment can lead to complications.
