Are Americans on their way to becoming more sensible when it comes to nutrition? According a Gallup poll, about two-thirds of respondents say they have given up drinking sodas with every meal. They are also 52% to say that they avoid sugar and 56% who avoid fat. Finally, more than 9 out of 10 people say they are thinking about including fruit and vegetables in their daily menus.
This is real progress because, ten years ago, for this same survey on eating habits, only 41% of people questioned said they had given up sodas and only 43% avoided sugar.
Less sugar but still as much salt
On the other hand, the (bad) eating habit that does not seem to have changed is that of salt consumption. Between 45 and 46% of respondents try to calculate their salt intake. While we now know that eating less salt helps prevent cardiovascular diseases, the recommendations do not seem to have been heard yet. While the many studies that have focused on the impact of soda consumption on the state of our pancreasWhere on fertility, seem to have been well understood. A small revolution in a country where one is now officially sick with obesity when one has a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30.
For this survey, Gallup interviewed 1,012 people over the age of 18 and of all origins, spread over the 50 states of the United States.
