Between 300,000 and 400,000 Russians die each year from the causes of smoking. In an attempt to reduce this figure, the Russian government began by banning smoking in restaurants. But this week, the Russian Ministry of Health made a much more drastic proposal. He plans to ban the sale of cigarettes to anyone born after 2014, even and above all, when they have reached legal smoking age.
This ban should therefore take full effect in 2033.
This measure is part of the anti-smoking plan drawn up by Minister Véronika Skvortsova and presented in the newspaper Izvestia. This plan has set itself the objective of reducing tobacco consumption by 25% by 2025. The smoking ban should gradually be extended to public transport, community apartments, shopping centers and bus stops. (with obligation to respect a distance of 3 m to light a cigarette).
According to the Russian Health Ministry, the loss of potential years of life due to smoking averages 9 years for men and 5.6 years for women.
