You wouldn’t expect it, but this car is driven by the most reckless drivers
Adorable flip-up headlights, modest power, a perpetually fun-loving face only surpassed by the Austin-Healey Sprite, a friendly format and owners waving gleefully at each other. Don’t fall for it, it’s all one big facade. They may seem so amicable, those Mazda MX-5 drivers, but it’s the scum of the ledge. Research by Insurify shows Mazda MX-5 drivers to be the most reckless on the road.
The insurer delved into its own data and concluded that an average of 15 in 10,000 people have been fined for reckless driving. The driver of a Mazda MX-5? At least five times as much. Out of every 10,000 MX-5 riders, 75 have a reckless driving endorsement. That’s more than any other car model in the study. The researchers think that the low purchase price of an MX-5 encourages reckless driving. In addition, the car also invites, er, playful driving.
A little note
Although of course you should never ruin a good story with the facts, still a small nuance. This research was conducted in America and other reckless drivers on the list drive, for example, a Cadillac ATS or a Saturn L200. You don’t see that very often here. The Ram 1500 and Volkswagen CC, number eight and seven on the list, are often seen driving here. We cannot say whether the data can be applied one-to-one in the Netherlands. But keep an eye on them, those Mazda drivers.
