Mercedes keeps a promise to Arnold Schwarzenegger
You didn’t think the G-class would escape Mercedes’ relentless electrification program, did you? This is the Mercedes EQG concept, but you can leave that last word out soon, because this electric G-class is really going into production.
At first glance you would think that this concept is the complete opposite of what the G 63 with V8 stands for. But Mercedes says the electric version is just as good at off-roading as the G-class combustion engine. This is because it has four motors: one on each wheel. This should give it amazing traction and controllability, with maximum torque available from zero rpm. And they are also equipped with two-speed transmissions.
The Mercedes EQG is still serious tool
The EQG retains the split ladder chassis and rigid rear axle of the regular G-Class. He is certainly not a toned down crossover. The batteries, of currently unknown size, are clamped between the chassis beams. This ensures a low center of gravity, another useful feature on unpaved roads. Incidentally, the Mercedes EQG can climb steep slopes of up to 45 degrees.
Okay, this is still a concept, so it has some shiny concept features that the production version won’t make. For example, we don’t think 22-inch wheels are ideal between the boulders. The protective strips are equipped with lighting, just like the rack on the roof where you throw your suitcases and tents. And in the place of the spare wheel on the back you will now find a box for your charging cables.
When exactly is the Mercedes EQG coming? That is not yet known, but we are already looking forward to our first whisper-quiet mountain ascent.
