“Antibiotics are not automatic”. Behind the formula, well known to the French, the message is still struggling to get across. In the Parisian columns, a group of doctors and patient associations, such as the French Federation of Diabetics, are calling for a necessary change in mentalities in the face of the still too systematic use of antibiotics. The consumption of these drugs, unsuitable in 30% of cases, continues to climb, observe the authors of this cry of alarm relayed by the daily. However, this excess of “antibios” worsens the phenomenon of bacteria resistancewhich become more difficult to fight. This antibiotic resistance would cause more than 12,500 deaths in France each year. Professor Eric Senneville, interviewed by Le Parisien, underlines the urgency to react. “The situation is deteriorating. We see it for example with skin infections, which are more and more numerous and which are costly. If antibiotic resistance continues to progress at this level of intensity, without any other treatment option, there is will soon have banal infections that we can no longer treat. (…) Patients die not from the seriousness of their disease, but from not having the right treatment “.
A national campaign in 2019
For the specialist, the French must get rid of this antibiotic reflex to better encourage innovation by promoting research. Awareness goes through doctors invited to prescribe these drugs sparingly, for a limited period “to promote innovation” according to the Parisian forum.
A national awareness campaign to reduce this consumption of antibiotics should be launched in 2019 according to the newspaper.
