Tumors or ectopic pregnancies can lead to the removal of one or both ovaries.
The female reproductive system includes two ovaries, which play an important role in reproduction. The ovaries are located on either side of the uterus and are responsible for the production of the eggs and sex hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone.
Sometimes medical conditions require surgical removal of one or both ovaries. This surgery is called an ovariotomy or oophorectomy. Reasons for removing one or both ovaries include ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, cysts, benign or malignant tumors or breast cancer. During uterine surgery, it may be wise to also remove the ovaries.
When only one ovary is removed and the second, healthy ovary is retained, a woman can still become pregnant. Various methods are used for the removal of ovaries. That is why it is important to discuss with the doctor which method is most suitable for you.
