Regular consumption of yogurt would reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in hypertensive men and women, according to a new study of more than 70,000 people, followed for 30 years.
High blood pressure is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Various clinical trials have already demonstrated the beneficial effects of the consumption of dairy products on cardiovascular health. A new study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, shows a beneficial effect of regular consumption of yogurt on cardiovascular risk.
In nurses who consumed at least 2 yogurts per week, the reduction in the risk of myocardial infarction reached 30% in women and 19% in men. In women, it is associated with a 16% reduction in the risk of coronary revascularization.
A very large study for 30 years
In other studies, consumption of dairy products has been associated with beneficial effects on co-morbidities associated with cardiovascular disease, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.
In the current analysis, more than 55,000 women (aged 30-55) with high blood pressure followed in the Nurses’ Health Study cohort and 18,000 men (40-75 years) who participated in the study. ‘Health Professionals Follow-Up Study’ were analyzed.
They were asked to complete a 61-item usual dietary intake questionnaire and report any events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and coronary revascularization. All medical records were then re-analyzed to confirm any new diagnoses reported.
Risk reduction
During the 30 years of follow-up of these cohorts, there were 3,300 and 2,148 cases of cardiovascular disease in total (myocardial infarction, stroke, and revascularization, respectively) in the Nurses ‘Health Study and in the Nurses’ Health Study, respectively. ‘follow-up study with health professionals, respectively.
In both groups, participants who consumed more than two servings per week of yogurt had a 20% reduction in the risk of coronary heart disease or major stroke during the follow-up period. When coronary revascularization is added, the risk reduction is reduced for both men and women, but it is still significant.

Regular consumption of yogurt, combined with a healthy diet, would therefore reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in hypertensive men and women.
